This is one of two exquisite, atmospheric paintings by Eric. This and “By the big tree” would make a beautiful pair.

Eric Oswald Eatwell, was born on 7 May 1974 and raised in Johannesburg as the eldest son in a family of three children.

He was once described as one of those true finds of raw natural talent sent to torment and frustrate teachers and professors at formal art teaching institutions. He is the epitome of the square peg in a round hole where boundaries and conformity are broken. He creates his own definition of art and beauty through his work and perception of the world.

Despite the obvious dislike of standards and norms, Eric gained much from the National College of Arts – (Johannesburg Art College) where he obtained his National Senior Certificate and Natal Technikon where he studied for a period. It is unusual that whilst learning from teachers, Eric allowed no imprinting of their constrictive styles, and he remained his romantic, passionate self. After Art school he traveled widely throughout South Africa – always observing people and theirway of life.

As a young artist he would paint scenes of the busy taxi ranks and train stations of Johannesburg with crowds of people shaded under colourful umbrellas, billboards and mud puddles. Now living in Molteno, a small town in the heart of the Eastern Cape, he tends to focus his subject matter more on the rural folks of the area as they go about their daily lives. It is the everyday scenes involving people, busy with life, while taking pleasure in the slow passing of the day where Eric finds his inspiration. He regards himself as an outsider documenting the rural South African lifestyle.

Eric paints very quickly in a painterly ‘Impressionistic’ style using bold impasto strokes of the brush and pallet knife. He is one of the few artists who can draw with his brush and is never frightened to accept what speed and passion have left on his canvas. He accepts the overall impression rather than dwell on the possible distortion of size and context.

Eric has been painting professionally since 1995 and both South Africans and visitors from abroad have discovered the energy and beauty of his work. His popularity continues to grow as he constantly explores new means of expression in his work. He is a rare gem, adored by many.
