About Lee-Ann Rodwell

“Lee-Ann Rodwell’s artwork is beyond amazing, it is absolutely stunning and vibrant. I wish I could express in words how her paintings make me feel but it’s better that you see in person yourself. Don’t ever stop painting, please.” - visitor to The Rodwell Gallery, Franschhoek

About The Artist Lee-Ann Rodwell

Lee-Ann is an “olde soul”, a lover and collector of aged treasures that carry the energy of worlds departed. If she could slip through the veil she would be found in Rembrandt’s studio, or Toulouse Lautrec’s Moulin Rouge, or peering over the shoulder of the crazed painter Antonio Mancini. These masters have inspired and driven Lee-Ann to create works that reinterpret their techniques through her own creativity and contemporary eyes.

Lee-Ann is driven by deep rooted inner inspirations, resulting in unique works of a prometheus nature, that is, made up of different and disjointed parts to create the whole. A 17th century enigmatic face with modern hands, a set of eyes from two different people and time periods, a modern face in a 16th century veil. Many of the paintings feature intentional imperfections, awkwardness and subtle symbolism

In 2020 Lee-Ann started a range of 12 close to life sized oil paintings which became the Beyond the Veil collection. Each painting in the series communicates to the unique inner power and sexuality of women, revealing the innate strength of character that has borne them through the trials and tribulations of the discriminatory centuries past.

Lee-Ann’s paintings exude a strong nostalgic, mystical feel born out of her fascination with life after death. Some of Lee-Ann’s subjects have introduced themselves to her whilst in a dreamy liminal state, imploring to be brought into being. Others are already in her life.

She is versatile and her collections have expanded to large oil portraits of imaginary people from Tangier and rich floral abstracts. Lately she has discovered an exciting ability to “channel” while painting with no pre conceived idea of what will emerge. This has led to highly imaginative and surreal paintings.

Lee-Ann has been fascinated with the creative process from a very young age, and has gone on to study at The Florence Academy and under many internationally esteemed artists, including David Kassan, Max Ginsberg, Robert Liberace, Hollis Dunlap, Sean Cheetham and Tim Benson in countries as disparate as France, Spain and Portugal.

Lee-Ann returned to South Africa eight years ago after having lived in London and Mauritius for the previous 25 years. She lives in Cape Town in the gorgeous seaside village of Kalk Bay and enjoys swimming in the sea throughout the year!
